4th Post - August Overview

Finally, here are my recommendations for August, hope you enjoy them and find them interesting to watch, listen, and eat. In the meantime, August has much to offer especially in London, so head out this month and take in all the best new events, exhibitions and best events in the capital.

Yes, British Summer Time has officially begun, and, despite no guaranteed sun, it's time for Londoners to step outside. Whilst the capital's museums still offer some of the world's best exhibitions (and are perfect respite from the inevitable summer rain), London's offering a whole heap of fantastic outdoor activities to take part in.

Regent's Park Open Air Theatre:

The award-winning Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre is a London landmark – a firm fixture of summer in the city, providing a cultural hub in the beautiful surroundings of a Royal Park.
Its steeply raked auditorium is one of the largest in London with 1,250 seats, yet those who attend say it is one of the most intimate. Each night an incomparable atmosphere is created by the buzz of people enjoying their theatregoing in every sense: friends setting up hampers on the picnic lawn, filling their glasses with wine or drinking Pimms in the bar as the fairy lights twinkle in the trees.

Yet, the Open Air Theatre is not just about an amazing atmosphere, it is about remarkable storytelling too. Built upon a core of outstanding dramatic credentials, we aim to present bold and dynamic productions that stimulate the senses. Weather and climate add a thrilling contribution to our work, making the relationship between performer, text and audience a truly unique event at every performance. Over 140,000 people attend our four annual productions between May and September with many people telling us they saw their first theatre production here. Catch the classic films such as Goldfinger and Breakfast at Tiffany's this month.

Notting Hill Carnival:

Europe’s biggest street festival, Notting Hill Carnival (Sunday August 24 - Monday August 25 2014) is a vivid spectacle representing London's multicultural past and present. Since 1964 the capital's Afro-Caribbean communities have celebrated their culture and traditions with a two-day festival of fantastic live music ranging from reggae to dub to salsa, soca floats, steel bands, uplifting beats, jerk chicken and fried plantain food stalls, and much more.

Amorino Ice Cream Parlour:

At this London branch of a US chain, your Italian ice-cream comes shaped as a flower. At least it does if you ask for a cone on which ice-cream slabs, rather than scoops, are formed into ‘petals’ atop a crispy waffle. The petals can be made from as many flavours as you wish – even if you choose the small size. This is a handy innovation, as the vast array of flavours can be a bit hit and miss. A juicy passion fruit offered a tangy freshness, which complemented the dark chocolate hit from the chocolate sorbet. If you fancy something more substantial choose waffles, crêpes or brioches – all served with or without ice-cream. A small selection of chocolates and sweets is also for sale. The shop itself is small, with dark brown wood furnishings that make it feel even more so. Still, there are enough tables to seat up to ten people at a time and you’ll even find a few chairs outside on the pavement.
