The New Cult Classics

The One with a Waiting List - Chanel Gabrielle £79 for 50ml

After a 15 year hiatus, a new Chanel scent was always going to be about polish and statement. True, Gabrielle is deliciously floral, but it also hinges on mystique. Perfumer Oliver Polge dreamt up his own imaginary bloom, playing with different scent molecules to create the purest of white flowers. He piled on the jasmine, used white musk to make the scent smell more velvety and accentuated the creaminess of tuberose with milky sandalwood. The freshness of orange blossom with mandarin peel, grapefruit and a hint of blackcurrant makes this perfume a star buy and definitely worth the purchase.

The Feminist One - Michael Kors Sexy Ruby £90 for 100ml

Ever wondered what female empowerment smells like? Precisely like this, according to Michael Kors, who cites Beyoncé as one of the muses behind his new scent. To that end he has wrapped fruity floral notes - raspberry, jasmine and orange blossom in a blend of rose petals and apricot to conjure up the softness of sin, pepper for a bit of Bey, then added moss and cashmere woods for an intriguingly dark twist.

The Mysterious One - Mugler Aura £70 for 50ml

It's not just the bottle that has a Wizard of Oz quality to it. While we can't promise a pair of ruby slippers, Aura does have an other world composition. There's tiger liana, an ingredient never used in perfume before, that manages to smell both like sugared almonds and church. Rhubarb leaf and orange join the line up to bring freshness, while the leathery bourbon vanilla dry down is an unexpected surprise.

The Seductive One - CK Obsessed for Women £68 for 100ml

The name and campaign, featuring images of a young Kate Moss, are as close to teenage time travel as you can get. But don't mistake this mere reinvention of 1994's Obsession. Obsessed is a ballsy subversion of gender stereotypes. There are his and hers scents, the but the clichés of how men and women have been switched. around. In this bottle, traditionally masculine notes such as white lavender and creamy musks, play out against citrusy neroli, while the men's version is in thrall to overtly feminine vanilla. Seductive, I think yes...
