September 2014 - Music
Pop singer Ariana Grande has collected her second number one album in less than a year with her sophomore release My Everything. The record sold 169,000 copies in it’s opening week, which is a rise from her debut, which came out at just about this time last year. The CD was released on August 25th, while her first album Yours Truly hit shelves September 2nd, 2013. That titles went on to sell 138,000 copies, a respectable bow for a newcomer with only one top ten hit to her name at the time. The success of My Everything isn’t as much of a surprise this time around, as the singer has been dominating radio and the singles sales charts lately. As previously noted, Grande recently became one of four women to have three singles charting in the top ten of the Hot 100 simultaneously. All three of those hits—“Problem” featuring Iggy Azalea (who also joined Grande in the history books by scoring a triple of top tens in the same week), “Break Free” with producer Zedd, and “Bang Bang”, which sees her sharing the spotlight with Jessie J and Nicki Minaj—are on her new album. While 169,000 copies sold doesn’t get the 21 year old close to some of the biggest sales weeks for albums in 2014, it does put her far and away in the lead this week. My rating 8/10.
