13th Post - May Overview

So here are May's posts, hope you enjoy them and find them interesting to watch, listen, eat, read and of course not forgetting about May's hottest beauty products and making sure you embrace this Summer's most elegant look. In the meantime, May has much to offer especially in London, head out this May and take in all the best new events, exhibitions and happenings in the capital.

The Udderbelly Festival:

Enjoy a fun-packed festival of live acts beneath a giant upside-down purple cow, as the Southbank Centre’s Udderbelly Festival returns to the banks of the Thames. The vibrant season of events sees a wide range of comedy, circus, music and all manner of novelty and variety acts over the early weeks of the summer. Highlights this year include Circus Maximus, one of the nation’s leading circus competitions, where daring and inventive acts battle it out for audience applause and votes. This joins Austentatious: An Improvised Jane Austen Novel, a hilariously wacky show performed in regency costume by a cast of rising stars; while Andrew Maxwell (star of hit TV show Mock the Week) keeps the laughter going with his witty take on life in the capital. Add this line-up to a comedy club for kids to practice their jokes, child-friendly shows and outdoor bars, and there’s never a dull moment while the purple cow is in town.

McQueen the Play:

A beautiful and haunting voyage into the visionary imagination and dark dream world of the late Alexander McQueen, fashion’s greatest contemporary artist. “I’ve got a 600-year-old elm tree in my garden. I made up a story: a girl lives in it and comes out of the darkness to meet a prince and becomes a queen.” Alexander McQueen, 2008.

A mysterious girl has been hiding in a tree in McQueen’s Mayfair garden for the past eleven nights, secretly watching him as he struggles to find inspiration for his new collection. Tonight she climbs down and breaks into his house to steal a dress she could never afford to buy, in the hope of becoming someone special. He catches her, but instead of calling the police, he takes a chance and lets her stay. Together, they go out onto the streets of London and into the whirlwind of McQueen’s life. As the girl begins to unravel before him, it becomes clear that she needs more than her dream dress to see her through the night. With its beauty, the world invites us all to live another day, and with each other, two troubled souls may just find the comfort they so desperately crave.
This is a moving, poetic and unmissable insight into the fairytale landscape of McQueen’s genius, as glimpsed at in his iconic fashion shows. British actor Stephen Wight (Bluestone 42) will play the eponymous Alexander McQueen, alongside acclaimed Hollywood actress, Dianna Agron (Glee), in her London stage debut.

Five years after his death, a new theatre production will explore “the visionary imagination and dark dream world” of the celebrated fashion designer Alexander McQueen. McQueen, written by James Phillips (The Rubenstein Kiss), will be set over one night in London. It follows a girl who breaks into the designer’s home to steal a dress and is caught by McQueen. The play takes inspiration from his imaginative runway shows. John Caird directs, with production design by David Farley and choreography by Christopher Marney. The play reportedly has the backing of the designer’s family. According to Phillips, McQueen’s sister Janet said the script was “true to his spirit”. The play will run from 12 May to 6 June 2015 at the St James theatre, London.
