Fashion - Perfect Pastels

This season there is a move toward the cooler and softer side of the color spectrum. An eclectic, ethereal mix of understated brights, pale pastels and nature-like neutrals take center stage as designers draw from daydreams of simpler times. Remembrances of retro delights, folkloric and floral art, and the magical worlds of tropical landscapes restore a sense of well-being as we head into warmer months. Many feel compelled to be connected around the clock because we are afraid we’ll miss something important. There is a growing movement to step out and create ‘quiet zones’ to disconnect from technology and unwind, giving ourselves time to stop and be still. Color choices follow the same minimalistic, ‘en plein air’ theme, taking a cue from nature rather than being reinvented or mechanically manipulated. Soft, cool hues blend with subtle warm tones to create a soothing escape from the everyday hustle and bustle.

Pastels are a spring favourite every year, making us wish for those sun-drenched days by the seaside.
We've got tips on how to work the dreamy trend and our best picks from the high street.

Not ready to go with full-on pastels? Start small with ice-cream shade accessories or individual pieces, and wear with neutrals. This pastel palette will draw attention, so remember to wear this hue on areas you want to get noticed. If you’re not a girly-girl, choose clothing in a sugary shade that also has a masculine edge, or in a heavier material, such as a leather jacket or torn jeans. If you only try one pastel, make it lilac. It’s the standout shade this spring, and is super-flattering on most skin tones.

Kristen Stewart:

We’re more used to seeing her in pared back, casual outfits (and still looking just as beautiful), but when Kristen Stewart puts on a dress, it really is a sight for sore eyes. The Hollywood actress stuns in a series of high fashion shots for glossy mag Harper’s Bazaar, and wears a beautifully intricate outfit by Chanel in every photo. Here, Kristen wows in a pink creation from Chanel’s Spring/Summer 2015 haute couture collection which features a 3D floral effect skirt in a rosy pink hue. Could this be the most perfect spring dress for summer or what? Sadly not available to buy online, you can still emulate Kristen's look on the high street (and for a lot less money), from the likes of Asos to Ted Baker. We'll be styling one of the below with barely there metallic sandals and an embellished clutch for our next sophisticated evening out.

Taylor Swift:

Spring has (finally) sprung in New York City, and Taylor Swift wore a powder blue dress to celebrate. Looks like she brought the sunshine back from LA with her! Though New York City’s Tourism Ambassador has been spending quite a lot of time on the other side of the country lately, it looks like she got back just in time for the warm weather, which goes hand-in-hand with showing off her $40 million legs. Swift stepped out in NYC on Saturday, wearing a blue mini dress with a Peter Pan collar, peach heels, and a canary yellow handbag. It was colourful, chic, and totally evocative of the season. Her ladylike ensemble, combined with her headband and red lip, were reminiscent of the Red era Taylor. You know. When she was all Jackie Kennedy-esque? The Style singer has been dressing a tad more edgy since her transition to pop, so it was nice to see a glimpse of the old Taylor we all know and love.
