August has a funny way of pretending time has stopped. The days stretch lazily into one another, tomatoes suddenly taste like sunshine, and every garden seems to be quietly plotting a takeover. Bees drift from bloom to bloom with the confidence of seasoned commuters, while butterflies flutter about as though they've forgotten where they were headed and decided it wasn't important anyway.

It's the month that asks very little of us except to linger. To eat peaches over the sink. To notice the way evening arrives in honeyed light. To collect freckles, read one more chapter outdoors, and convince ourselves that there's still plenty of summer left, even as the first hints of autumn begin whispering at the edges.

Notting Hill Carnival
